Approach vs Syncline: Which is Right for You?
Looking for your dream adventure van? You’re in the right place! Here at Outside Van, we’ve built two model vans, Syncline and Approach, that we believe will be the ideal vehicles to allow everyone, from burgeoning adventurers to experienced explorers, the freedom to take the road less traveled.
With decades of experience in van design, we understand the essentials and, crucially, what to avoid. We don’t push unnecessary extras. Our extensive field-testing across various conditions has enabled us to perfect two layouts on two chassis, empowering Outside Van to offer adventurers a vehicle that truly meets their needs.
First, let’s break down the two Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis we are comparing:

WHEELBASES:
The numbers 144 and 170 refer to the distance in inches between the front and rear axles. Mercedes-Benz offers two different wheelbase dimensions: 144, 170. In addition, there is the 170 extended. Syncline is built on the 144″ wheelbase, and Approach is built on the 170″ wheelbase.
144” — The shortest wheelbase size available. This chassis measures approximately 19’ 5” total from front bumper to rear bumper.
170” — This chassis measures approximately 22’ 10” total.
Syncline: 144 Wheelbase
Syncline was designed around seating and sleeping 2 full-sized adults, with all the amenities needed for extended off-grid adventuring. In fact, this new model has all the hallmarks of an Outside Van such as a full galley kitchen, the new Water Box interior shower system, a 1030Ah capacity lithium power system, heating and cooling, and many modular features that are tried and true. With its warm interior, Syncline is the perfect van for feeling comfortable and capable on any adventure.
Bumper to bumper: 19′ 5″

Approach: 170 Wheelbase
Approach was designed around seating and sleeping 4 people, with the same amount of lithium battery power (1030Ah capacity) and water capacity as Syncline. Even with its larger size, Approach takes on off-grid adventuring like a champ. It has similar functional features as Syncline such as the galley kitchen, Water Box interior shower system, and heating and cooling. Approach’s interior is specifically designed with a clean aesthetic so you can add your own personal flare.

HOW MANY PASSENGERS DO YOU NEED SEATING AND SLEEPING FOR?
2-4 Passengers: Approach
Approach is our signature family van that seats and sleeps four people. With two full sized beds when deployed, and a second row of DOT approved captain’s chairs, this 170 Model is perfect for two to four people, ideally a family, or just two people wanting a spacious and functional wheelbase.
1-2 Passengers: Syncline
Syncline seats and sleeps two people. It has a foldaway Murphy bed, and a small day bed. Syncline is optimal for one or two people, and maybe a dog if you don’t mind getting cozy!

WILL YOU FIND YOURSELF MOSTLY DRIVING IN REMOTE AREAS OR CITIES?
We ask this question primarily to address parking concerns. If you anticipate spending much time in remote areas where parking is plentiful, a longer wheelbase should pose no problems. However, in cities or busy towns with limited parking—where you might even need to parallel park—a shorter wheelbase could be a better choice.
Syncline’s 144” wheelbase fits easily into standard parking spots and offers easier parallel parking due to its excellent turning radius. Conversely, Approach’s 170” wheelbase can fit into a regular space if you pull up as far as possible (imagine the front tires hitting the curb). However, maneuvering into and out of tight parking spaces can be challenging because of the van’s size and turning radius. While Approach still handles well, it is not as agile as Syncline in certain situations. Nevertheless, both vans come with 360-degree backup cameras, and with a little patience, both can get the job done!
Syncline and Approach have upgraded wheels, tires, and suspension, so driving off-road is achievable with both models. If you’re planning on taking your van over some rough terrain, Syncline might be easier to maneuver with it’s shorter wheelbase, better turning radius, and better approach and departure angles.
