Custom Build Process & Models

Outside Van offers fully custom ground-up builds, limited-run Special Dealer Edition vans, and pre-configured Model Series builds. Fully custom builds let you design every layout detail, off-grid power spec, and gear storage system. Special Dealer Editions feature curated, high-end partner collaborations, while Model Series vans provide faster delivery times using proven layout templates.

Outside Van primarily builds on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis, specializing in 144” and 170” wheelbase AWD (All-Wheel Drive) and 4×4 models. Sprinter platforms provide optimal torque, safety systems, off-road capabilities, and chassis longevity for heavy-duty overland conversions. However, through our Custom and Service departments, we are able to build and work on a variety of chassis including the RAM Promaster and Ford Transit.

Lead and build times vary greatly depending on the scope and complexity of the conversion. For most builds, a 3 month lead and design time combined with a 5-7 month build time is average.

Our model series vans including Syncline, Parks, Overnight, and Approach are RVIA certified. Due to costs and logistics, our custom vans don’t go through the certification process, but that doesn’t mean they are not up to code! We take utmost care to make sure all our systems, layouts, and manufacturing processes are safe and not just up to code, but beyond the code requirements. To get an individual van like one of our custom vans RVIA-certified is a time consuming and expensive process that involves inspectors being present during the build process and routine checks that can really hinder the build times. Since our model vans are built using repeated layouts, systems, and manufacturing processes, we are able to get these certified efficiently.

Yes! We accept customer-provided Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis for custom ground-up conversions at our Portland, Oregon facility.

To ensure safety, structural integrity, and seamless integration with our custom components, client-provided vehicles must meet specific model year, mileage, and condition standards. Prior to starting your build, our engineering and service team will perform a comprehensive pre-conversion inspection. If you don’t already own a Sprinter, our team can also assist in sourcing a brand-new 144” or 170” AWD chassis directly through our dealer partners.

Power, Suspension & Technical Specs

Outside Van prefers high-capacity Lithionics lithium battery systems (ranging from 315Ah to 1000Ah+) paired with high-output secondary alternators, solar panel arrays, and secondary power hubs like Garmin EmpirBus. These systems run air conditioning, induction cooktops, and heavy electronics off-grid without needing a loud generator. However, when building a custom van or getting a power system upfit to a van, we will use a variety of brands and product specs to best fit the customers needs.

Yes, Outside Van equips builds with upgraded suspension systems, including custom-tuned FOX shocks, Agile Offroad RIP kits, and Van Compass systems. These upgrades improve ground clearance, increase stability during heavy payload travel, and reduce body roll both on highways and rough trail conditions.

Pricing, Purchasing & Warranty

Outside Van conversions typically range from $150,000 to $300,000+ depending on layout complexity, lithium power capacity, suspension components, and custom interior finishes, excluding or including the base Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis. All pre-built and model vans pricing includes the chassis price.

Yes, Outside Van partner dealerships and specialty lenders offer long-term RV financing options—often up to 15 to 20-year loan terms—for complete vehicle builds, allowing buyers to finance both the base Sprinter chassis and the custom conversion as a single package.

Yes, our Custom, Baseline, and select Special Edition vans can be purchased directly from us. Our model lineup (Syncline, Parks, Overnight, Approach, and Dealer Special Editions) are sold exclusively through our dealer network.

Every Outside Van conversion is backed by our 3-Year / 36,000-Mile Workmanship & Structural Warranty, covering components, cabinet construction, wiring, and custom interior installations completed by our team.

Major third-party components integrated into your build—such as Lithionics battery banks, Garmin control systems, FOX suspension packages, and rooftop air conditioning units—are supported directly by their respective manufacturer warranties. Additionally, the base Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis remains fully protected under the standard Mercedes-Benz OEM Warranty (3-year/36,000-mile basic and the extended 5-year/100,000-mile diesel powertrain warranty†), which can be serviced at any authorized Mercedes-Benz Vans dealer nationwide.

†Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Chassis Warranty coverage and duration are dependedent on the underlying chassis year and features. Not all chassis are eligable for the manufacturers warranty. Please call us to see if you chassis/build is covered.

Because Outside Van builds are built to high engineering standards, they qualify for specialty RV and Agreed-Value Auto Insurance policies rather than basic passenger vehicle coverage.

Because standard auto policies often only cover the base vehicle value, we recommend working with specialty insurance providers (such as Progressive RV, National General, or State Farm) that offer Agreed Value / Stated Amount coverage. Upon completion of your build, Outside Van provides a detailed, itemized build sheet and bill of sale to submit directly to your underwriter, ensuring your entire vehicle—chassis, lithium power system, and interior conversion—is fully protected at its true replacement value

No! We work on a variety of chassis, whether its a van, truck, or other type of conversion from multiple manufacturers at our Portland, Oregon Service and Upfit center. We do reserve the right to refuse service if the vehicle is not up to safety or build standards.

Outside Van builds are engineered for multi-season capability, but basic winterization and power maintenance are essential during freezing temperatures:

  • Freshwater System: If your van will be stored in sub-freezing conditions without active cabin heat, the internal freshwater tanks, lines, pump, and hot water heater must be fully drained using our integrated low-point drain valves and air-purge ports.

  • Lithium Battery Storage: High-capacity Lithionics battery systems feature built-in internal heating elements for low-temperature charging. However, for long-term winter storage, we recommend setting the battery main disconnect switches to standby/off and keeping the system plugged into shore power or maintained at a 50%+ state of charge.

While our manufacturing facility is closed to the public, we do offer private behind-the-scenes looks at our manufacturing process and private tours of our vans.
