At Outside Van, our mission has always been to build “purpose-built” vehicles that enable a life of freedom. It’s one thing for us to say we’ve built the ultimate adventure rig, but it’s another when the experts at New Atlas take notice.
In a recent deep-dive feature, New Atlas highlighted our Syncline model, calling it a “rugged adventure machine with a charmingly rustic, uniquely functional interior.”

Why Syncline is Making Headlines

Built on the agile Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 144 AWD chassis, the Syncline is the culmination of over 30 years of van-building expertise. While many 144-wheelbase vans feel cramped, New Atlas noted how Syncline maximizes every square inch of space through ingenious engineering.
Here are the key highlights that caught the industry’s attention:
1. The Ingenious “Water Box”
One of the most talked-about features is our updated Water Box Interior Shower System. Hidden within a bench seat, it unfolds into a fully enclosed, ventilated shower. It provides the luxury of an indoor hot shower without permanently sacrificing the precious floor space typical of traditional wet baths.

2. The Gear-First Murphy Bed
The Syncline utilizes a FoldAway Murphy Bed system. When stowed, it reveals a massive “Gear Wall” with integrated MOLLE panels and L-Track mounting points. Whether you are hauling mountain bikes, skis, or climbing gear, the Syncline transforms from a rugged garage to a cozy bedroom in seconds.

3. Off-Grid Power & Performance
New Atlas emphasized the Syncline’s ability to stay off-grid longer. With a massive 13.2 kWh (1030Ah) lithium-ion battery system, a high-output secondary alternator, and 140W of rooftop solar, you can run the 48V rooftop AC and induction cooktop far from the nearest shore power connection.

built for the trailhead
Syncline isn’t just a camper; it’s a tool for exploration. From the QuickFlip exterior table for trailside prep to the upgraded FOX Factory suspension and OSV off-road wheels, every detail is designed to get you to the remote trailhead—and keep you there in comfort.
As New Atlas correctly pointed out, we have transitioned our decades of custom-build knowledge into “over-the-counter” models like the Syncline, making high-end adventure more accessible than ever.
